Under a canopy of branches and cushioned by fallen leaves, Into The Woods is a meditative audio performance using a combination of live spoken-word and pre-recorded binaural sounds which distort your perception of reality.
Into The Woods follows a girl on a quest to reconnect with the land she grew up on. But as she journeys into her past she experiences a kind of dualism, her soul is divided. When her two souls meet in the deepest, darkest realms of the ancient forest, a transformation takes place. As we delve deeper into the story and so into the realms of the human mind, we are able to undo the rigidity and rules of language and expression. Words find new rhythm and order, sounds reverberate and slow down until they are no longer familiar, and the movement of the human body breaks free from its frame.
This story challenges us to consider the importance of reconnecting with ourselves, and our natural surroundings. It asks, what lies beyond the wall of sleep? How powerful is the human psyche? And what does it really mean to be alone in the dark?
Into The Woods debuted in November 2016 at Hamilton House. We are now applying for Arts Council Funding and hope to tour the performance in woodlands across the UK in April and May 2018. Dates and locations to be released later this year.
